Resistor-Capacitor (RC) transformer protection snubber circuits safeguard medium voltage distribution transformers against transient overvoltages, which minimizes failures. RC snubber circuits are crucial for the protection of dry-type distribution transformers, especially when close-coupled to vacuum switching devices.
These RC networks, consisting of RC configurations, are installed on the high voltage windings of transformers to mitigate transient overvoltages and dv/dt events. They are primarily employed in three-phase distribution transformers.
Medium Voltage RC Snubbers counteract damage from events such as:
Switching on an unloaded or lightly loaded transformer.
Transient recovery voltages (TRV) during transformer de-energization.
Current chopping (CC).
The snubber circuit comprises three fundamental medium voltage components per phase:
Damping resistors
Surge capacitors
Fuses

RC Snubber Circuit Components from Hill Tech
DAMPING RESISTORS: These non-inductive tubular power resistors, constructed of either carbon ceramic or silicon glass, are inherently non-inductive and can handle large surge energies with high continuous power ratings. They feature an anti-track coating and sufficient length, making them suitable for medium voltage applications.
Depending on the surge energy and continuous power rating required by the resistor two different technologies should be considered either silicon glass resistor or carbon ceramic resistor type. Silicon-Glass Tube Resistors are rated up to 330kJ at 1000W and 30kV, whereas carbon ceramic tube resistors are rated up to 119kJ at 225W and 120kV. Various mounting end-caps and clips are available for mounting these resistors.
FUSES: Fuses play a crucial role in preventing the destruction of the snubber circuit. If the fuses fail to operate, the resistors effectively act as fuses, resulting in the loss of protection provided by the snubber circuit.
High-speed, current-limiting fuses, such as the new HHA-BC series, are specifically designed for optimal performance in capacitor circuits. They are suitable for indoor and outdoor usage in the North American market. The voltage rating of the HHA-BC capacitor fuse matches or exceeds the maximum open circuit voltage of the system, ensuring effective operation during fault conditions.
The HHA-BC capacitor fuse is available in various voltage ratings, including 4.8kV, 5.5kV, 7.2kV, 8.3kV, 15.5kV, and 23kV. We offer different mounting styles, such as threaded/tapped ends (1/2” UNC or M16) and L-Bracket configurations with a 50N striker. The fuses equipped with a 50N striker offer visual fault detection through a bright red-colored striker and can also activate a microswitch assembly for remote monitoring.
It’s worth noting that all new capacitor fuses equipped with 50N strikers feature a thermal limiter mechanism. This mechanism triggers the striker under overload conditions when the internal temperature of the fuse exceeds specified levels, enhancing safety and reliability.

High Power DC Contactor
A new ceramic high voltage DC contactor is available, these contactors contain a sealed ceramic arc chamber that isolates from epoxy sealed DC contactors. This allows for larger DC voltages to be switched. Less battery power is required to power the contactors, because of the twin coil economizers, which results in overall increases in the EV’s driving range, and also makes an additional coil back EMF suppression unnecessary. And in the event of a failure, the main power contacts are mirrored to the position of the mechanically linked auxiliary contact mirrors, and can indicate the power contact’s position as part of a safety monitoring circuit.
Durakool offers high voltage contactor of 900-1500VDC, a high voltage for DC switching contactors, while also providing for more low-power needs, with ones that go as low as 450VDC.
Power Relays
Our high voltage DC contactor relay products are low-cost, compact, and have a long life. Our power relays perform efficiently even in challenging environments. There are over 120 power relays in stock. Of these include the DG3BL PCB Power Relay which contains a magnetic arc blowout that allows the relay to switch 50% higher DC voltage in comparison to relays of its same type. In relation to the PCB, it gets rid of the need to put it through high voltages and currents by using shielded fast-on blades for power terminals.

Their Activated Dry Electrode Technology® process is an environmentally friendly way of manufacturing cost-effective batteries and capacitors. Ultracapacitors, cells and modules, and lithium-ion capacitors all offer users higher energy density and significantly longer use life sustainability.
Activated Dry Electrode® Technology
Activated Dry Electrode® Technology processes active materials in an ecological and low-cost manner, free of NMPs. The process uses less energy and reduces carbon footprint, while also offering a variety of loading applications, and meets high-energy requirements, with a discharge capacity of 213.4 mAH/g and an efficiency rate of up to 99.4%.
Activated Dry Electrode® Technology is included in all of LiCAP’s ultracapacitors cells, and they are exclusively made in the United States. They have a nominal capacitance ranging from 350F-3000F and also have cells rated at 2.7V, 2.85V, and 3.0V.
Ultracapacitors Modules
Licap has ultracapacitor modules that can be customized to fit specific project needs. They range from 16V to 144V, and 9.6F to 500F. They can be used in extreme temperatures and can have a one million cycle lifetime, or 10-15 years lifetime.
Lithium-Ion Capacitors
The 3.8V lithium-ion capacitors product line has a longer life and higher power due to their increased energy density. Their LIC cells have a rated capacitance of 200F and 800F. LiCAP offers individual ultracapacitor cells rated at 2.7V, 2.85V or 3.0V and with a nominal capacitance of 350F, 370F, 600F, 1200F, or 3000F. All of LiCAP’s ultracapacitors cells include a patented cell assembly process utilizing laser weld internal connections and a laser weld hermetic sealing process for enhanced durability and reliability. The cells are RoHS and REACH compliant, and some cells are UL 810A. LiCAP also offers ultracapacitor modules, which contain our ultracapacitors cells connected in a series. The modules include voltage management, and some modules have an optional over-voltage monitor or temperature monitor. The modules may be connected in a series and parallel to achieve the voltage and energy requirements of the application.
LiCAP has partnered with Windurance to replace Wind Turbine battery storage, while also creating components that will fit in the same spot as the previous batteries with no system modifications needed. The LiCAP Ultracapacitor Energy Storage Module SM0500-016-GER, has a life of over 15 years and can operate in temperatures from -40 to 149 °F. The Windurance Capacitor Charging Unit 710-70004, can work without modifications in 20Nm and 30Nm configurations. In addition, LiCAP carries battery box energy storage systems of 20Nm and 30Nm.
