Hill Tech will be supporting Siba Fuse at the Solar Power International 2012 in Orlando, Florida this year, beginning Tuesday, September 10th to Thursday September 13th. This show will be held at the Orange County Convention Center – Orlando, Florida.

Siba will be showing its complete line of PV fuses:

Choose among these four standard extruded liquid channel aluminum heat sink bases, in order to create your own custom configuration. Liquid cooled cold-plate can be up to 60 inches long.

This is a highly advanced, dependable liquid cooling technology utilizing internal liquid channels extruded into the cold-plate. No longer is expensive drilling and fabricated processes required. This extrusion technology overcomes past size limitations and comes in four standard sizes; lengths up to 60 inches!

These can be configured in a number of parallel and series flow options provide an optimal thermal solution. The liquid channels locations were determined in order to accommodate almost all power semiconductors.  In addition, we can enhance thermal performance by using specifically designed turbulators which increase the flow rate in the fluid channel with only a minute increase in back pressure. Custom designed can a provided for specific thermal challenges.

Large-scale industrial heat pipes for power electronic applications

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, ILLINOIS, USA, Friday, August 31, 2012: Hill Tech Sales, a leader in Components for Thermal Management and Electrical Power Conversion today posted information on standard heat pipes to increase working size in a cold plate.

In the past engineers would not consider heat pipes for high power, power electronic applications for many reasons:

  • Low maximum heat energy transfer capacity – only 70 watts – 8mm tube OD.
  • Low temperature operation, (below the freezing point of water.
  • Limited working distance of 30 cm.

 With new heat pipe advancements tube OD’s of greater than 16mm can be built, allowing for heat energy transfer in the kilowatts, assemblies with capacity of 32kW or more can be made.

Other innovations include:

  • Antigravity Heat pipes with temperature ratings of +5 to +275 C
  • LTSC – low temperature Heat pipes with temperature ratings ·40 to +30″C
  • Diode type for heat transfer primarily in one direction
  • Variable conductive Heat pipes for self regulation and automatic temperature control
  • Flat profile for heat spreaders
  • Loop Heat pipes

Heat pipes in a heat exchanger assembly provide heat transfers with no pumps are moving mechanical parts adding to system reliability.

 Enhancing thermal spreading in high energy density regions can be addressed by using the flat profile heat pipes and fabricating them, stacked side by side in an assembled plate. Since the heat pipes themselves are rather inexpensive, it is good design practice to add additional pipes to improve your design margin.

 Note another inherent advantage in this concept is that this assembly now has improved built-in reliability through redundancy of heat transfer devices in the unlikely event of a single heat pipe failing.

Standard heat pipe to increase working size in cold plate

Most times engineers will look at the standard 30cm length of heat pipe and dismiss using it in an application because their working distance is beyond 30 cm. The same occurrence also applies to heat dissipation being over the rating of a single heat pipe.

 Both of these issues can easily be addressed by using a properly designed heat pipe assembly. The first issue of length is easily addressed by interleaving heat pipes in a plate assembly with a nominal amount of overlap, in many cases 2 to 3 cm.

 The second issue of enhancing thermal dissipation can be addressed by using the round heat pipes in a flattened state, stacking them side by side in an assembled plate. Since the heat pipes themselves are rather inexpensive, it is good design practice to add additional pipes to improve your design margin.

 Note another inherent advantage in this concept is that this assembly now has improved built-in reliability through redundancy of heat transfer devices in the unlikely event of a single heat pipe failing.

Large companies, when awarded a Federal government contract, may need to adopt a similar plan for themselves and their subcontractor, since the subcontracting plan is normally incorporated into awarded contract.
