So, What is going on?
PMI’s products have been designed and are operating such that they stay out in the field longer than expected
PMI’s products are being repaired by the third-party repair houses
Some customers or end users (military and government) will repair the products themselves
It may be too expensive to ship a product back to PMI so the end user will use a local repair company
Some of the above/all of the above, etc.
I have had an opportunity to visit small, third party power supply repair houses as well as to talk with a large, power supply repair company. It is quite clear that the smaller companies do not necessarily use approved or new material. They get material by cannibalizing product as well as trying to “make do.” F.Y.I. – PMI does not normally sell its material to repair houses, which forces them to get material wherever they can. I have to assume that the larger companies do the same.
When it comes to upgrades, modifications or implementation of ECOS, etc, third party repair houses are unable to support this aspect of customer service.
At this point, PMI will repair and refurbish only its own product. But, it will certainly entertain replacing competitors’ old product that can no longer be repaired and/or no longer serviced by the competition.
There are scores of PMI competitors that are no longer in business and/or are no longer servicing their older products – especially the 5” X 8” X 11” power supplies – the same power supplies that PMI is still continuing to build.
Effective September 1st, PMI will:
Officially launch its new Website. See the link at http://www.hilltech.com/products/power_components/Power_Supplies.html#500-8000
